Artist Statement

I believe there are aspects of life that are unseen and that value and beauty are not immediately recognizable. I am motivated by her desire to have true sight and to see things in a pure, non-worldly way. I desire to see ordinary objects as precious, hear a parable, imagine a Western drama, see rabbits, and empathize with their frightened souls. I want to see things beyond the veil, to have the scales fall off her eyes, and to have true sight.

I was raised in Wilmore, Kentucky, with a university and seminary down the street and a church on every corner. I grew up with neighbors who were theologians, equestrians, academics, and farmers, and she saw art in the literature and illustrations from the books she read.

I work with graphite, acrylic paint, and screen printing. I sometimes work off photographs and her imagination. I often create art based on her thoughts on theology, the bible, songs, and her experiences and thoughts. I rely heavily on her imagination of literature, song lyrics, and, sometimes, old movies. My art is unified in a bold style of stark contrast with bright colors and strong lines.

I am motivated to connect people to her beliefs. I believe that myths, images, and stories connect people. I make images of songs, verses, and poems; common feelings and familiar human experiences connect them all. I want to communicate with her viewers by familiarizing them with difficult-to-consume ideas and what they personally mean to her.

I am influenced by Western art and movies like Big Country, Man from Snowy River, The Magnificent Seven, and books like Little Britches. I am inspired by country or folk music, songs like The Man from Waco, The Master’s Call, Homegrown Tomatoes, and Soldier, Poet, and King. I am inspired by the Western-inspired painting of Thomas Blackshear, the colors in the paintings of Claude Monet, the illustrations, and the Inuit artists Kenojuak Ashevak and Quvianaqtuk Pudlat.
